Reclaiming Our Spirit: Indigenous Ways of Knowing, Healing, and Balance
In a world that often pulls us away from ourselves, it is vital to remember: You are being contacted—not by aliens, but by your inner spirit. Our ancestors have always known that the spirit world walks with us, guiding, teaching, and offering clarity if we are willing to listen. The lessons of our past, our pain, and our resilience are all part of this sacred connection.
For Indigenous Peoples, spirituality is not separate from everyday life; it is woven into the fabric of our existence. Whether it is through dreams, intuition, ceremonies, or the quiet moments in nature, our spirits are always speaking to us. The challenge is whether we listen. Colonial systems have worked tirelessly to silence our spiritual ways of knowing—through residential schools, the banning of ceremonies, and the suppression of our languages. But our spirits? They never left us.
Healing Through Connection
Loss and trauma are experiences our people know well. The loss of land, culture, language, and even loved ones through violence and systemic neglect have left deep wounds. When we experience personal loss, like the destruction of a home, the grief is layered with generations of unresolved pain. We carry these burdens in our blood memory, yet our ancestors left us tools to heal.
Indigenous teachings remind us that healing does not happen in isolation. We heal through community, through reconnecting with the land, and by allowing ourselves to feel. The Western world often tells us to push forward, suppress our emotions, and "move on." But our teachings tell us to sit with our grief, honor it, and let it teach us. When we ignore our pain, we silence the spirit’s call.
The Power of Intuition: Listening to Spirit
How often have you felt something deep within—an urge to speak, to move, to act—but ignored it out of fear or doubt? That feeling is your spirit trying to guide you. In our traditions, this is known as being in balance with the spirit world. Elders teach us that our ancestors are always nearby, whispering wisdom into our hearts.
Yet, modern society dismisses this knowledge. We are told to seek external validation instead of trusting ourselves. We are told to follow logic over feeling. But our people know that logic without spirit leads to disconnection. The Western world monetizes spirituality, selling healing as something that must be bought. But true healing? That comes from within, from ceremony, from the land, from our communities.
Decolonizing the Mind: Reclaiming Our Teachings
There is no "right" or "wrong" way to heal, love, teach, or share—our ancestors knew this. Every Indigenous Nation has its own ways, and all are valid. Colonization sought to replace our spiritual ways with rigid structures that defined worthiness through external measures. But we do not need permission to reclaim our ways.
Reconnecting with spirit means rejecting the idea that healing and knowledge must come from outside sources. It means remembering that we are born with gifts—our ancestors saw them before we even entered this world. Whether it is through storytelling, medicine work, art, or leadership, we all have a role to play in healing our people.
Moving Forward with Purpose
The world is in chaos. Climate change, systemic racism, and ongoing colonial violence are heavy on our spirits. But our ancestors survived worse. We come from strength, from knowledge keepers, from warriors who fought so we could be here today.
Now is the time to listen. Listen to the land, to the spirits, to the quiet knowing inside you. Honor your intuition. If you feel called to speak, speak. If you feel called to act, act. If you feel called to heal, begin. The spirits are guiding us home, back to ourselves, back to balance.
Ignore those who tell you that you need permission to love, teach, and share. You are being guided. You are being called. Answer.
