Many First Nation communities are facing serious challenges like overcrowded homes, inadequate infrastructure, and poor living conditions. While families struggle, band leadership often claims there's no money to fix these problems. But is that really the full story?

Where’s the Money Going?

The First Nations Financial Transparency Act (FNFTA) requires chiefs and councils to disclose their salaries and expenses. In some communities, leaders are making large salaries, even in the six-figure range, while basic needs like housing repairs or education go unmet. There are reports of leaders spending money on expensive travel and luxury accommodations, all while claiming there isn’t enough funding for essential services.

What You Can Do

Look at the Numbers: You can find financial reports online or request them from the band office. Check if spending on leadership’s travel or perks is taking away from community needs.

Record Statements: If leaders say there's no money for essential services, ask for proof. Document their statements, whether at meetings, events, or online.

Notice the Lifestyle: If leaders are living in luxury while claiming the community is broke, it’s a red flag. Photos, videos, or receipts of their personal spending can show the difference between their words and actions.

Ask for Accountability: Use social media, local outlets, and community meetings to question where the money is going. Members have the right to know how funds are being spent.

Push for Change: If funds are being mismanaged, push for action. Community members can vote for change or call for new leadership when necessary.

The Cost of Ignoring It

If these issues aren’t addressed, the community will continue to suffer. Housing won’t get fixed, and vital programs won’t be funded. It's time for transparency and accountability. If leaders claim there’s no money but live in luxury, it’s time to ask: where is the money really going?

We all deserve answers.
